A little background
Bucky Box was started 7 years ago in 2011, as a prototype application for a single local food business. This expanded into a fully blown startup with a little bit of seed money and a government grant as we knew the software was needed if local food was to take hold. The software launched publicly in 2013 and gained adoption in key countries of UK, Australia and NZ. And by 2014 we had decided to open source, this migration was started in 2015 and completed in 2017.
We helped a lot of local food enterprises along the way, and still do. However Bucky Box as a product failed to pick up enough local food enterprises to be viable as a "startup venture". From 2015 onwards we scaled down the team.
Since this time Bucky Box has been a labour of love on an open-source project. What we do here is provide hosting so the experience is turn-key, we do this as a volunteer operation. As of 2018 we no long directly offer customer support.
Bucky Box is an Open Source project
All our software is open-source. What this means is the blueprints are in the open domain, you may if you wish even hire your own developer to install it on your own cloud servers, independent from us and you're free to modify it as you need.
You pay for hosting only, we do not profit
If you sign up and use this service on our site, the fee you pay only covers the costs of maintaining the servers that the software runs on. Plus of course admin fees we are charged, things like accounting fees, software products that 'keep the virtual lights running'.
Ced and I, being the founders, volunteer our time.
Customer support has ceased
We no longer directly offer training nor technical support for the service. Though we've seen many new operations join the service without drawing on training or technical support, I want to be explicit in that we recommend only using Bucky Box if your business the DIY type or has a dedicated technical team.
We do not anticipate many support issues as the software is very stable and has been running for years.
We may train third party contractors who may be able to help as independent support consultants, however at this time we make no commitments to this.
Bucky Box code is frozen. We will not be adding new features or doing bug fixes on the product, though the community is free to submit their patches should they wish.
We are committed to maintaining the hosting service, at a minimum, for another 2.5 years (through to the end of 2020), possibly longer. Unless unforeseen issues crop up and things become cumbersome.
Bucky Box was launched on the idea of providing a much needed service to farms and businesses that were taking part in a resurgence of local food. We grew our team and built a product that helped many farmers and box scheme operators.
Bucky Box continues to be a gift to the farms and local food operations that rely on us. It is the love and appreciation of those local food heroes that kept us continuing our work.
